Traditions

Like most holidays, Chan-ukah is based on strong traditions. Here you can learn how to keep the Chan in Chan-ukah.

The Viewing

This one is simple and most important. Each night everyone must gather together to watch at least one Jackie Chan movie.

The Lighting of the Menorah

Before starting the movie, someone is chosen to light a candle on a Chanukah menorah. This is done to pay tribute to Chanukah, the Jewish festival that inspired Chan-ukah, and to remind us what day it is.

The Munching

Before, during, or after watching the movie, it is nice to eat something from the Cantonese tradition. This is done to pay tribute to Jackie Chan, Jackie’s native Hong Kong, and the incredible Hong Kong film industry.

Playing Chan-Go

Chan-Go is a particular form of “Jackie Chan Bingo” often played during Chan-ukah. You can learn how to play it and print out your own cards here. This is done because it is fun. Jackie wants us to have fun.

The Donning of Sock-Shoes

Sometimes partakers will remove one of their shoes and wear a sock decorated to look like a shoe. This is done to remind us of the time Jackie broke his foot during the filming of a stunt and finished the film with a sock painted to look like a shoe over a cast.
